Morgan Stanley pays $14 million oil-trading fine

WASHINGTON — In another black eye for Wall Street, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission late Thursday announced a $14 million fine against Morgan Stanley Capital Group Inc. to settle accusations of hiding its complex oil trades.The settlement, in which Morgan Stanley did not admit or deny the accusations, comes as oil prices have continued their steady upwards march and have some oil analysts again saying that excessive speculation is again pushing up energy prices.

UBS Seeks to Thwart Swiss Investors’ Arbitration Attempt

UBS Securities filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan on Tuesday seeking to thwart an attempted arbitration claim by a group of Swiss investors. The arbitration claim was filed with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority in relation to alleged losses suffered by the Swiss UBS clients.The arbitration claim hopes to recover $41 million in hurts from UBS in connection with an investment made in a company called HealtheTech Inc.

UBS computer glitch blamed for $31bn trade error

Switzerland’s largest bank, UBS, has said that a glitch in the computer systems of its Japanese securities unit led to the company mistakenly placing a $31 billion order for convertible bonds in the videogame designer Capcom.UBS Securities Japan said human error – so-called ‘stout finger syndrome’ – had not been to blame for ordering 100,000 more bonds than it wanted.

FINRA Details Special Procedure for Auction Rate Consequential Damage Cases

The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) today announced details of a special arbitration procedure for investors seeking recovery of consequential hurts related to their investments in Auction Rate Securities (ARS). Customers entitled to file for consequential hurts under ARS-related settlements that firms have concluded with FINRA or the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) may use this special procedure.
