Oil giant BP succeeded Sunday in connecting a mile-long pipe to help capture oil flowing into the Gulf of Mexico from its hurt well, “an vital step” toward capping the massive spill, the company said, but not a complete solution.The company initially connected the tube overnight, collecting some oil, gas and water, but then the tube was temporarily dislodged.

April 20 Massive oil spill imperils Gulf Coast

On April 20, the Deepwater Horizon, a semi-submersible offshore drilling rig operated by BP and located in the Gulf of Mexico close to the Louisiana shore, exploded. Two days later, it sank. At least 11 workers were killed in the accident.The explosion, fire, and subsequent sinking has resulted in a massive, and still continuing, oil spill and slick that is threatening the coast line throughout the Gulf region states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.Now, as emergency response teams from a wide range of agencies try to plug the leak, which is said to be located at 5,000 feet below the surface, there is no known method for stopping the oil spill or for fully containing the slick.

250 MILES SOUTHEAST OF HOUSTONBP taps into Tiber Prospect, estimated to have between 4 billion and 6 billion barrels of oil equivalent.Nearly seven miles below the Gulf of Mexico, oil company BP has tapped into a vast pool of crude after digging the deepest oil well in the world.The Tiber Prospect is expected to rank among the largest petroleum discoveries in the United States, potentially producing half as much crude in a day as Alaska’s well-known North Slope oil field.The company’s chief of exploration on Wednesday estimated that the Tiber deposit holds between 4 billion and 6 billion barrels of oil equivalent, which includes natural gas.
