This Day in Wall Street History 1895: U.S. gold supply running dry

The early 1890s were not kind to America’s gold reserves. The nation’s supplies of the precious metal swooned under the strain of the recently passed Sherman Silver Act as European investors, fearful that America was chucking gold for silver, increasingly sold their gold supplies overseas.Coupled with declining revenues triggered by various protective tariffs, the reserves plummeted, taking a severe toll on the economy.

Citigroup Fined by FINRA for Tax Evasion Strategies

The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) has fined Citigroup Global Markets Inc. $600,000 and censured the brokerage firm for tax evasion trading strategies found to be operating among its affiliates. The first scheme involved international clients of Citigroup circumventing US tax laws, allowing them to increase their respective returns.

Iraq Stock Exchange Goes Electronic

The Iraq Stock Exchange has launched electronic trading for five of the exchange’s 91 companies. The system was paid for with a $6.5 million grant from the U.S. government and has taken three years to install, the Wall Street Journal reported. Since its launch in 2004, traders at the exchange relied on white boards showing information.
